Last Sunday, local sapphics1 had their cake and ate it too at Dyke Nite Orlando’s Cake Sitting Party. The Lil’ Dyke Chapel took place at Stardust Video & Coffee in Winter Park, and welcomed an array of people to dance, flirt, and for some, even get married!
The event is sculpted around “Cake Sitting”, a wild twist on your typical drag or burlesque show. Performers hit the stage parading in campy uniforms, dancing to gay classics like Madonna’s Like A Virgin, and Dove Cameron’s Boyfriend. Performances had a wedding theme, fueled by some wacky motive to be sitting on a cake. One performer posed as a romantically frustrated flower girl, while another set showcased a bachelorette striptease gone wrong. Dyke Nite Orlando actually debuted this performance concept at their first Cake Sitting Party last year, with some familiar faces re-joining the mix this time around.

Performer Sir Gorgeous got their start as a drag entertainer last year with Dyke Nite’s event. What started as a love for makeup and a dare from friends quickly became a passion that turned into the best experience of their life. They have gone on to create Soul Haux Collective, an organization dedicated to hosting nightlife & community events for BIPOC2 sapphics. Sir Gorgeous returned to perform again this year, this time with their status as a local sapphic celebrity solidified.

Aside from the drag and burlesque festivities, wedding bells rang for two lovestruck romantics that night. Celebrating a one-year anniversary following their meeting at last year’s Cake Sitting Party, these Dyke Nite veterans tied the knot under the light of a thousand lanterns, surrounded by the love radiating from everyone in the building. Their union in “unholy matrimony” showcases one of the many ways that Dyke Nite Orlando has brought people together.

This event was in partnership with People’s Free Kitchen, a grassroots food sovereignty program located in Orlando. Dyke Nite held a Cake Kit Donation Drive at their event, donating six full “cake kits” (packs of cake mix, soda, and festive decorations) to the organization, encouraging attendees to spread the love with donations as well.
Events like these hosted by Dyke Nite are meaningful to Orlando’s local sapphic community as they provide a safe space for mingling, dancing, and being your authentic self with like-minded individuals. Many partygoers are Dyke Nite regulars, making sure to never miss one of their action-packed events. Kylah Perez, a first time Dyke Nite attendee, shared how enamored she was being able to meet such a wide variety of people that night.

2 BIPOC – Black, Indigenous, people of color
The contagious energy at this event was uplifting, positive, and raunchy, certainly true to the essence of lesbian culture. It was clear that everyone in attendance has a chunk of their heart reserved for loving, appreciating, and supporting their community, a mindset that radiated off the walls of the event. If you’re interested in having a wild night to remember with a crowd you’ll never forget, keep up with Dyke Nite Orlando on Instagram and stay tuned for their upcoming events!
