Laughter erupts and echoes off the walls every Thursday and Saturday evening at Barley and Vine Biergarten in Orlando’s Milk District. Milk District Comedy, run by comedian Jarri Knows (@jarriknows), is a local organization dedicated to spreading the joy of comedy to Orlando through bi-weekly open stage stand-up comedy shows. Orlando Life stopped by Milk District Comedy’s first show of April; a sold out spectacle with a plethora of hilarious performers and audience members alike.
The show opened with host Tae TattedUpp (@taetattedupp), an Orlando stand-up comedian well-known in the local comedy scene. She’s been hosting Milk District Comedy shows for about two years now, after getting her start in comedy five years back. Encouraged by her friends from beauty school to pursue a career in comedy, Tae encourages other aspiring comedians to be themselves, without worrying about gatekeepers. Her raunchy humor and chaos filled comedy sets filled the room with a contagiously fun energy, and she set the night off with a bang.

Following Tae, an ensemble of laugh-out-loud acts hit the stage. Comedians came out from far and wide to perform at the Barley and Vine stage. One stand out from the night was Lakeland native Big Joe Murray (@bigjoemurray). He’s been a frequent performer at the Milk District Comedy Showcase for the past four years.
“My favorite thing about Orlando comedy is that there’s always something going on, and everybody is very collaborative. Everybody works with each other, and everybody’s cool with each other.” - Big Joe Murray

Comedian Liz Miller (@lizmillercomedy) also brought a killer set to the stage that night. Originally from Boston, hearing about Orlando’s comedy scene through the grapevine is what brought her to the city. She praises Orlando for having easy-to-access information online about the comedy community, as it is what really encouraged her to bring her craft here.
Passionate and lively comedians like these are exactly who Milk District Comedy strives to put in the spotlight. After a hysterical set, organizer Jarri Knows shared his thoughts on the local comedy community with Orlando Life.

“We’re helpful and we’re real. There’s a lot less of a barrier of entry, I will say, for new comics [in Orlando]. The lateral movement is really good. A lot of times when the comedians leave Orlando, they always take off. It’s like a pressure cooker for comedy here because there’s so much stage time and you have so much access to it. So by the time you go to other cities where it’s more limited, you stand out a lot more because you’re seasoned.” - Jarri Knows
The warm and welcoming energy that the Orlando comedy community brings is unlike any other, and Milk District Comedy is a lively hub for comedians and fanatics alike. If you love watching stand-up comedy on your TV, support Orlando’s local comedy scene by stopping by Milk District Comedy on your next night out!
