For the second year in a row, Orlando played host to the opening event of the Major League Pickleball (MLP) season, welcoming fans and athletes to the USTA National Campus. The Orlando Squeeze took full advantage of home court energy, launching their 2025 season with a 3-1 win over the SoCal Hard Eights and finishing the weekend with a total of 11 points and fourth overall.

The Orlando Life was at the USTA for the opening ceremonies and caught up with team members Tom Evans and Ally Phillips. Both shared their excitement for the upcoming season and the culture being built behind the scenes.

“We’re so excited to be a part of the Orlando Squeeze this season,” Evans said. “It’s awesome having Dylan Frazier, Fed Staksrud, Lacy Schneemann, and Sam Parker on the team. Watching those guys just today was awesome.”

Phillips agreed, noting how quickly the players have gelled. “We kind of just clicked really fast,” she said. “We all have different personalities, but it doesn’t matter. We're very close already and will obviously continue to grow that friendship.”

That strong internal chemistry showed on the court. Newcomer Samantha Parker impressed throughout the weekend, and her mixed doubles pairing with Dylan Frazier helped secure a key win over the LA Mad Drops. Even in the team’s lone loss, a spirited Saturday night match against the Brooklyn Pickleball Team, the camaraderie and competitive fire were on full display.

Owned by the DeVos family, who also own the Orlando Magic, the Squeeze are led by Ryan DeVos, who serves as both co-owner and general manager. His dual role as the Magic’s Vice President of Shareholder Engagement is a reflection on the organization’s deep investment in Orlando’s sports scene.

Phillips shared how connected the team already feels to the broader Orlando sports community: “The team owners, Ryan and Michelle, are amazing. We got to visit the Orlando Magic training headquarters a couple days ago, it was so cool. The whole team’s a great vibe, and we can’t wait for the next match.”

As a pickleball player myself, It was incredible watching the talent on this team over the weekend. Hearing Tom and Ally speak of the team's unity I can’t help but feel there’s a memorable season ahead for the Orlando Squeeze.
